KEPOS

Prototype of an urban garden pavilion

The MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, invite you to the presentation: KEPOS – Prototype of an urban garden pavilion. Combining knowledge on smart planning and smart technologies with citizen participation, the KEPOS installation highlights architecture’s integrating and innovative role in implementing sustainable urban developments.

The MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, invite you to the presentation:

KEPOS – Prototype of an urban garden pavilion
Architecture by Angelica Lorenzi & Dennis Schiaroli,
under the direction of Galo Moncayo & Anna Gulinska

Presentation Dates: 7 – 22 June 2017

Welcome Address
Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, General Director, MAK
Andrea Börner & Bernhard Sommer, University of Applied Arts Vienna

Presentation
The presentation is of KEPOS (κῆπος: a garden, any place planted with trees and herbs), an urban garden pavilion, prototypical street furniture.

Combining knowledge on smart planning and smart technologies with citizen participation, the KEPOS installation highlights architecture’s integrating and innovative role in implementing sustainable urban developments. Actively engaging citizens, the installation is showcasing the potentials of information and communication technology (ICT) in public spaces for user interaction and participation, thus raising interest in architecture and public space among a broader audience.

Take Part—Take Care!
Connected to the internet, KEPOS engages via social media with the community, transforming its space into an active participant of urban life. Therefore, the pavilion is not only designed to provide a semi-private shelter in the urban context but it also engages by communicating its current status.

Using light KEPOS will show the current status of the plants’ need for water. At the same time when the plants are in need of hydration it will post on social media.

The engagement asked of the participants is to come to visit KEPOS to touch the plant in need of water thus activating its hydration. KEPOS will be monitoring and posting online the air quality, temperature and light conditions inside and outside of itself to inform on the micro-climate being created.

Follow the project on Facebook and Twitter to get updates on the development of KEPOS.

8:30 p.m.
Artist Intervention
Patrick Jaritz and Rüdiger Suppin, Body scanner (interactive installation)

The 5-part discursive program Today's Tomorrows explores the work of the future and the future of work against the backdrop of current processes of automatization and deregulation-from an analytical as well as a speculative perspective.

Working the Body questions the submission to work-of the body and of subjectivity-but also discusses moments of (bodily) resistance.

Today, specific competences and knowledge are not sufficient anymore on the labor market. On top of this, workers need to prove perfect self-management; they need to be fit, beautiful, young, and professional; and they need consider work as the path towards self-fulfillment. A range of body techniques-also based on technology-serves this purpose, marking a further step in biopolitics. How can the working body escape this normalization?

The 5-part discursive programme Today’s Tomorrows explores the work of the future and the future of work against the backdrop of current processes of automatization and deregulation – from an analytical as well as a speculative perspective.

Rehearsing the Future critically reflects on collective and performative practices used in businesses, that claim to represent participatory dynamics and strategies of conflict removal.

Subjectivity, creativity, and individuality, but also professionalism and flexibility are increasingly being demanded on the labor market—with massive impacts on body and psyche. The adoption of methods of corporate theatre and other performative and speculative methods of problem solving—especially techniques of improvisation and virtuosity—will be critically examined during this discussion.

Symposium organized by the Council for a 21st Century Progressive Economy

There is hardly any concept as vague and ubiquitous as “digitalization.” But what exactly does this catchphrase mean? The Council for a 21st Century Progressive is getting to the bottom of this and other questions. Their focus is not limited to buzzwords hyped in the media like 4.0, robots, Google cars, or the Internet of Things; instead they turn their attention to socially relevant questions: How are these technological opportunities changing our social and economic fabric? Which social and economic conditions are necessary to make these changes socially acceptable?

Digitalization, robotization, and artificial intelligence will be explored in depth and from various angles: from the organization of work, the financing of society, and education in times of artificial intelligence to the ethical issues of human-robot interaction. The Council for a 21st Century Progressive Economy will present its resolution on these topics and discuss it with experts from Austria and abroad.

In cooperation with the Montanuniversität Leoben, the necessity of closing materials cycles becomes a design task. So that it stays in the materials loop, household aluminum waste is melted down in a smelting furnace in the middle of the city. This valuable material circulating through our daily lives is cast in ingots, which, over the course of the MAK exhibition, continue to stack up as the symbolic currency of urban mining. Prior to this enactment within the city space, the agency We Make has devised a campaign—in the form of an aluminum packaging collection drive—to sensitize the Viennese to this topic.

Artificial Intelligence, automatized working environments, the Internet of Things, “transparent” human beings: this tour provides an overview of the challenges of digitalization.

Artificial Intelligence, automatized working environments, the Internet of Things, unlimited digital communication, "transparent" human beings, new individuality: turbo-digitalization is turning our (working) lives upside-down at break-neck speed. But who will look after the interests of human beings in this digital revolution driven by technological and economic forces? This tour provides an overview of the challenges of digitalization.

Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine

In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already changed broad areas of our living and working environments. In this tour, we make contact with an increasingly ubiquitous species: the robot.

The intrusion of intelligent, autonomous machines into our everyday lives has long been more than just a utopian fantasy. In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already fundamentally changed broad areas of our living and working environments, whereby the relationship of human beings to this new technology is often ambivalent. In this tour, we make contact with an increasingly ubiquitous species: the robot.

Driverless Vehicles in the Urban Environment

MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with future.lab, TU Wien and the AustriaTech, invite you to a panel discussion.

MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with AVENUE21, TU Wien and the AustriaTech, invite you to a panel discussion.

If we are talking about driverless vehicles, we are implying far more than merely self-driving. With the concept of autonomy, we are endowing devices with agency, because we are according them (a certain amount of) freedom. A privilege that we human beings are loath to grant other living creatures. When these robots leave the factory floor and locomote on streets and squares, it also means that they are laying claim to a place in the valued space which has always been understood to be the stage of public life. How can we imagine cities of the future with these actors?

Participants
Amelie Klein, Curator Hello, Robot.
Mathias Mitteregger, Project Lead, AVENUE21, TU Wien
Graham Parkhurst, Professor of Sustainable Mobility, UWE Bristol
Martin Russ, Managing Director, AustriaTech, bmvit
Katja Schechtner, Innovation Agent/Research Fellow, OECD/MIT Media Lab
Arjan van Timmeren, Scientific Director, AMS Institute, Amsterdam; Professor of Environmental Technology and Design, TU Delft

Moderation
Wojciech Czaja, architectural journalist, university lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna

Location: MAK Columned Main Hall

____________

Urban mobility is about to fundamentally change. The autonomous car, the icon of this change, however far in the future it still might be, will move the center of our self-centered worlds, thereby changing society and our built environment.
AVENUE21 is a two-year research project at the future.lab, TU Wien. Funded by the Daimler and Benz foundation, an interdisciplinary team of researchers, including architectural theory, urban development and planning, mobility studies, and sociology explores the effects autonomous cars could have in European cities.

The MAK FUTURE LAB is a creative laboratory founded by the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art. Through workshops, lectures, panel discussions, and other formats the MAK FUTURE LAB generates interdisciplinary contributions to a humane shaping and utilization of Digital Modernity. It positions design, architecture, and fine art as driving forces of socially, ecologically, culturally, and economically sustainable market economy models. Through diverse cooperations, it networks these creative sectors with the fields of science, research, business, and politics. The MAK FUTURE LAB aspires to develop both holistic orientation models and strategies for the commons inspired by such models, as well as concrete, innovative business ideas for the future.

Curator-guided tour: Hello, Robot. & ARTIFICIAL TEARS

with Marlies Wirth, Curator Digital Culture and Curator Design Collection, MAK

Hello, Robot. tells the story of a convergence of humans and machines and highlights the crucial role played by design. ARTIFICIAL TEARS examines the quality of "humanness" against the background of science fiction and of "singularity" from the perspective of art.

Robotics-driven by Digital Modernity-has already fundamentally altered our working and daily lives. Hello, Robot. tells the story of a convergence of human and machine. More than 200 exhibition objects from the realms of art, design, and architecture, as well as examples from technology, film, literature, fashion, science, and pop culture examine the inexorable hype around intelligent machines and the crucial role played by design. This first comprehensive exhibition on the opportunities and challenges of robotics invites visitors to reconsider their own attitude towards these new technologies.

The group exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS cites a speculative, unwritten chapter of human history. The augmentation or "optimization" of the human organism is completely redefining conventional concepts and lifestyles. It is becoming increasingly implausible to differentiate between "real" people and their incarnation in the media. Thirteen artists examine the quality of "humanness" against the background of science fiction and "singularity."

Longing for Labor

Inaugural event

Work has become the determining factor of our identity. But human labor is increasingly being replaced by a workforce of self-learning intelligent robots, and the economy appreciates people only as consumers.

A series of talks organized by the MAK in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer, Vienna as part of the MAK FUTURE LAB

A panel discussion by MAK FUTURE LAB in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer Wien.Work has become the determining factor of our identity. But human labor is increasingly being replaced by a workforce of self-learning intelligent robots, and the economy appreciates people only as consumers. How does this impact our way of life, apart from evident economic issues? Can we finally do what we have always wanted to do? Do we actually know what to do? Do we want robots to relieve us from our labor? Could the relief eventually become a burden?

Combined tour: ARTIFICIAL TEARS and Work it, feel it!

Selected works from two exhibitions are the basis of this guided tour, where visitors will discover the challenge of “humanness” in times of artificial intelligence and learn how contemporary artists see notions of work now and in the future.

The starting point of the combined tour is a walkthrough of the exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS. Singularity & Humanness – A Speculation at the MAK. Quoting from a chapter of human history yet to be written, the exhibition is a plea for humanity, for the resilience and variability of the human condition, and the significance of remembering and forgetting.

Our guide will bring you to the second exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz. The exhibition Work it, feel it! revolves around notions of work and body— now and in the future. Learn how contemporary artists take a critical approach towards this topic. One that is informed by a profound examination of historical and current disciplinary mechanisms shaping society.

The City Factory, a research laboratory for new fields within the creative industries, will explore new cultures of production and work in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots. Work. Our Future.

With advancing digitalization and the dramatic ecological changes to our planet, we have to rethink work, production, and consumption. Which sustainable and meaningful design fields are opening up?What modes of work are associated with this? Will consumers become producers and designers in the future? Going forward, if significant areas of work are to be covered by robots and artificial intelligence, how can the social safety net be successful? How do we want to redistribute work? How can we leverage the creative principles and strategies of the commons for new alternative economic sectors from a design perspective?

Housing Labour

The lecture will show projects that aim for a renewed emancipatory and political project of housing for the City of Vienna.

Today, it seems housing along with consumption are the two instruments left for city planning. The lecture will discuss new forms of housing in an economy that is driven by a new spirit of capitalism, whose dirty industry has been outsourced to distant countries and in which immaterial labour has become the dominant form of production. The lecture will show projects that aim for a renewed emancipatory and political project of housing for the City of Vienna.

Join us on an early night nature walk. We will meet at the water tower and visit the habitats of the large conehead (Ruspolia nitidula), the European green toad (Bufo viridis) and possibly encounter some bats on our way to Lassallestraße Underground station. Sturdy shoes are recommended, a camera is also a good idea.

Pottery-making robots, mobile crowdworking stations, and computers running hot will serve as the basis for discussion. The path will lead us past the workshops of the University of Applied Arts, where digital manufacturing methods have long been established, and ultimately finish at the MAK with the exhibition Stadtfabrik [City Factory]: New Work. Longing for Labor II

On the Optimization of (Wo)Man

What effect does the idea of the optimization have on human awareness and our mental and physical health? What are the consequences of self-optimization? Will "we ourselves" become redundant?

A series of talks organized by the MAK in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer Wien as part of the MAK FUTURE LAB

“The imagination is a unique mental faculty that fuses rational and emotional faculties,” writes philosopher Ágnes Heller (Hannah Arendt Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York) at the opening of her essay From Utopia to Dystopia (2016). And adds: “Neither thought nor action occurs without some kind of emotion.”

The application of brain implants to improve performance, the “upload” of knowledge and memory or the fusion of the human mind with artificial intelligence is not common practice just yet. How does the idea of “optimization” affect human consciousness and our mental and physical health? What are the consequences of self-optimization? Will “we ourselves” become redundant? Wherein lays the human capacity for agency in the worldwide network of smart technologies and algorithms? Which particular role do women have in this regard?

Participants:
Diann Bauer, Artist and Writer
Tim Cole, Internet Publicist and Author
Peter Hoffmann, Social Policies Department, Arbeiterkammer Wien
Janina Loh, Philosopher (Philosophy of Technology and Media)
Sean Raspet, Artist and founder of non/food

Moderator: Marlies Wirth, Curator VIENNA BIENNALE 2017

The talk is held in English.

Artists’ Tour ich weiß nicht—Growing Relations between Things

Curator Janina Falkner in dialogue with the artists Sofie Thorsen and Günther Selichar

In the group exhibition ich weiß nicht [I don’t know] – Growing Relations Between Things, 17 positions of contemporary artists, most of whom are living and working in Austria, spin a narrative about the affect of things.

It is not only in the context of a museum that objects made by human hand act as parts of ever new networks in a realm beyond their creators. In the framework of the exhibition ich weiß nicht [I don’t know] – Growing Relations Between Things, Sofie Thorsen and Günther Selichar speak with exhibition curator Janina Falkner about the independent existence of human-made objects and our ambivalent relationship to things in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots. Work. Our Future.

Urban Wilderness Workspace

Here in the urban wilderness there are a number of things to explore: discovery tours around the Nordbahn-Halle and ample opportunities to hammer, saw, sew and build in the temporary workshop.

A lot can be produced out of the materials found: wind wheels, an obstacle course, a yurt or a wilderness goddess. The program is open but offers suggestions and stimuli. The surroundings encourage you to think about the differences between designed space and wasteland. Is something lacking here? How many facilities do we need? And what kind of open space? At what point do we feel that design is giving instructions and imposing restrictions?

Over a period of two weeks an adventure garden will be built, which we will open at 1pm on 28.7. We will take what we have made with us and then leave the place to its own resources again.

The combined guided tour starts off with a walk around the exhibition Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine in the MAK. Robotics have already fundamentally changed large areas of our daily lives and work routines—the exhibition explores the opportunities and challenges that arise from this process. Afterwards our art mediator accompanies you to the Applied Innovation Lab. We find ourselves in the midst of numerous heated discussions on the future of work. The exhibition How Will We Work? attempts to capture and map out a tumultuous debate: How will we work in the year 2030, and what sort of workers will we be?

Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine

In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already changed broad areas of our living and working environments. In this tour, we make contact with an increasingly ubiquitous species: the robot.

The intrusion of intelligent, autonomous machines into our everyday lives has long been more than just a utopian fantasy. In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already fundamentally changed broad areas of our living and working environments, whereby the relationship of human beings to this new technology is often ambivalent. Cheerful Working?

Urban field research on new forms of work

From Franz-Josefs-Kai to the Nordbahnhof, past the Makerspace and the housing project we look for new forms of working and living. Working happily? What should that look like? What structures could be helpful here?

“How Will We Work?”, the exhibition in the AIL asks. More? Less?  In a different way, that much is certain. Unconditional basic income, a 32-hour week...will we finally have time to learn carpentry, to pore over the Russian classics or to repair the broken washing machine?

As the name suggests the Az W Care + Repair project in the Nordbahnhof Halle is devoted to caring and repairing.  How can different kinds of urban knowledge have an impact on neighbourhood networks, new kinds of communal spaces and the further use of existing materials?

The Walkshop builds a link between these two thematic areas: working happily? What should that look like?

Cost: € 5,60 / € 4 with Ferienspiel-Pass

CityFactory: New Work. New Design.
An exhibition of the MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts /Contemporary Art and the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure
Curators: Martina Fineder, Harald Gruendl, Ulrike Haele (IDRV - Institute of Design Research Vienna)

In the framework of the Alpbach Technology Symposium, the MAK and the Vienna Business Agency are showing a satellite of the exhibition City Factory: New Work. New Design., which is on view in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots. Work. Our Future. In front of a background of the increasing digitalization of our work environment and the rapid development of new technologies, the exhibition thematizes new (collaborative) forms of work and design strategies. Seven projects serve as examples on the basis of which three socially relevant future fields of work are deliberated: New creative work and interdisciplinary co-creativity, new social work including working for the common good (commoning), and new sustainable work in the sense of circular economy and innovative usage of urban resources.

Combined tour: ARTIFICIAL TEARS and Work it, feel it

Selected works from two exhibitions are the basis of this guided tour, where visitors will discover the challenge of “humanness” in times of artificial intelligence and learn how contemporary artists see notions of work now and in the future.

The starting point of the combined tour is a walkthrough of the exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS. Singularity & Humanness—A Speculation at the MAK.

MAK Design Kids “Hello, Rattling Robot!”

Workshop for 8- to 12-year-olds (unaccompanied)

In the exhibition Hello, Robot. we get to know the robot species in all its forms. Afterwards, we build our own rattling robots and in a grand finale have them run a fast and furious race against each other!

Have you ever met a robot? Humanoids, non-humanoids, androids—in the exhibition Hello, Robot. we get to know the robot species in all its forms. We also explore such concepts as artificial intelligence and algorithms. Afterwards, we build a simple robot ourselves.

When you’ve decided on his appearance, he’ll start to rattle and move around on his own, thanks to a so-called Fizzbit. And then it’s time to really start rattling as our robots run a fast and furious race against each other.

In Service to Society: New Work for the Common Good

A series of talks organized by the MAK in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer, Vienna as part of the MAK FUTURE LAB

A series of talks organized by the MAK in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer Wien as part of the MAK FUTURE LAB

The last several years have given rise to a new, marked interest in the commons. In design, architecture, and other areas of the applied arts, a number of established practitioners, but chiefly younger generations of creative professionals are increasingly questioning the resource-intensive, quantitative, growth-oriented business models of the dominant market economy and are searching for alternatives that promote socially fair and ecologically sustainable, qualitative growth. How can the strategies of the “commoning” niche sector be transferred to the mainstream? What potential do the commons have to change society and the current market economy?

The 5-part discursive program Today's Tomorrows explores the work of the future and the future of work against the backdrop of current processes of automatization and deregulation-from an analytical as well as a speculative perspective.

Living Labour / Working Life casts a feminist perspective on working relations in order to trace the hierarchy between reproductive and productive, immaterial and material, cognitive and manual labour.

Capitalism has separated the public, productive, and accumulative space from the private, reproductive, maintainer space. This separation goes hand in hand with social and gender-based divisions that reinforced the invisibility of (devalued) work mainly performed by women. Today, not only gender-inequalities continue to exist, also the hierarchical order of immaterial and manual labour seems set, while private life, desires, sexuality, and affects enter the public, economic space. How has this situation evolved? How can we re-think care, maintenance, and reproductive activities?

The 5-part discursive program Today's Tomorrows explores the work of the future and the future of work against the backdrop of current processes of automatization and deregulation-from an analytical as well as a speculative perspective.

Re-organizing Work examines emancipatory perspectives on an understanding of work and on the organization of labour – from new forms of workers’ representations and organizations, up to the claim for a universal basic income and a defense of doing nothing.

Since the 1970s, a massive deregulation of labour is in process. Many workers are confronted with precarious conditions and are forced into self-exploitation. Automatization, outsourcing, as well as the transfer of production to countries with lower wages add to an aggravation of employment conditions by increased competition and an endangering of waged work itself. In the context of the crisis of union or party representations and a glorification of work ideology, fights for workers’ rights need to be re-constituted and the moral necessity of work itself put into question.

The CityFactory, a research laboratory for new fields within the creative industries, will explore new cultures of production and work in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots. Work. Our Future.

With advancing digitalization and the dramatic ecological changes to our planet, we have to rethink work, production, and consumption. Which sustainable and meaningful design fields are opening up? What modes of work are associated with this? Will consumers become producers and designers in the future? Going forward, if significant areas of work are to be covered by robots and artificial intelligence, how can the social safety net be successful? How do we want to redistribute work? How can we leverage the creative principles and strategies of the commons for new alternative economic sectors from a design perspective?

The exhibition “The Promise of Total Automation" investigated our relationship to a world of machines, technological objects, and electronic devices. The prospect of a fully automated future while acutely reshaping the notions of work, production, and value creation, also feeds emancipatory scenarios ultimately leading to the end of labour. Total automation is upon us but its liberating promise is yet to be claimed for.

This book surveys the literature on that story. It tracks its fabric, layers, and mediations, and unfolds a bibliography, and chronology of automation and of its promises.

Collaborative building and living has long been a regular aspect of Viennese life. In numerous urban developments, people’s individual needs and desires as regards their living space can be realized within the framework of cooperative building projects. On the site of the former slaughterhouse in the 3rd district, now metamorphosed into the future-oriented location Neu Marx, this approach is being widened to include creating workspaces within building cooperatives.

A fishbowl discussion attended by experts will explore the topic of commercial building cooperatives in Neu Marx. It will investigate the question of how we will structure our work environments together in future.

Introduction:
Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, General Director of the MAK and head of the VIENNA BIENNALE
Sigrid Oblak, Director, Wien Holding

Keynote presentations and discussion:
Britta Jürgens, frizz23 – Gewerbebaugruppe Berlin
Robert Temel, independent architecture and urban researcher in Vienna, building cooperative expert
Raimund Gutmann, wohnbund:consult

Based on the price range of Viennese markets, inexpensive spaces can be reserved on a digital platform under communal terms of use in order to develop, present, and market ideas and projects. As a concrete offering and informal site for creative collaboration, the project alludes to the changes in the realm of work and challenges municipal authorities to reflect on the allocation of workspaces as part of the commons.

Going beyond any DIY aesthetic, Post-Couture offers international fashion designs as open digital patterns for people to produce themselves. The clothing pieces are produced locally using a laser cutter or ordered as prefabricated sets. For the VIENNA BIENNALE, tools of the maker culture are transferred into a shopping context. Together with Austrian fashion label meshit, Post Couture is bringing a future consumption and production scenario to life as an alternative to the fast-paced fashion industry.

Walkshop: In Short Supply?

Meaningful work in times of digitalization

A walk with workshop elements links the exhibition CityFactory: New Work. New Design. to prototype experimental projects in the city—to the demonstrators. The way between is the proverbial goal!

The walkshop starts in the exhibition CityFactory: New Work. New Design. New Design is based on a new concept of work, one of the intellectual pioneers of which is the social philosopher Frithjof Bergmann. In his model for a fairer distribution of work, he proposes a three-part system: 1/3 gainful employment, 1/3 self-providing, and 1/3 work that we really want to do. A close reading of this model generates questions and snippets of ideas that accompany us out into the city to the demonstrators. These real time research labs explore how New Work can be put into practice. On the walkshop, we get into conversation with the participants!

Living in a Robot?

How Algorithms and Robotic Systems are Changing Architecture and the City

Smart surfaces and mobile walls that automatically adjust to the needs of the inhabitants, or that regulate indoor climates like a living skin—such things already exist today, at least as prototypes.

The MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy invites you to a panel discussion.

Smart surfaces and mobile walls that automatically adjust to the needs of the inhabitants, or that regulate indoor climates like a living skin-such things already exist today, at least as prototypes. The networked home, in which machines and objects communicate intelligently with each other, is a frequent topic of discussion under the heading "Internet of Things."

"As virtual systems become spatialised, our cities are being transformed into the so-called ʻInternet of Things' (IoT). The inanimate physical environment is increasingly associatedwith digital layers: code married to matter, physical brick to virtual bit. The city is becoming a physical companion to Big Data, even as the urban infrastructure allows for digital information to proliferate. [...] In this robotics-driven living experience, buildings will not appear as pieces of machinery or equipment, but rather as extensions of the lives of the subjects who inhabit them. They will provide environments in which more and more dimensions will be customisable, engaging our senses and resonating with our moods." (Carlo Ratti in the catalog to the exhibition Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine)

Curator Marlies Wirth in dialogue with Sofia Goscinski and Julian Palacz

In the group exhibition ich weiß nicht [I don’t know]—Growing Relations Between Things, 17 positions of contemporary artists, most of whom are living and working in Austria, spin a narrative about the affect of things.

It is not only in the context of a museum that objects made by human hand act as parts of ever new networks in a realm beyond their creators. In the framework of the exhibition ich weiß nicht [I don’t know] – Growing Relations Between Things, Sofia Goscinski and Julian Palacz speak with exhibition curator Marlies Wirth about the independent existence of human-made objects and our ambivalent relationship to things in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots.

Combined tour: Hello, Robot. and How Will We Work?

Two exhibitions, a coordinated guided tour: We address the speculative question as to how we want to work in the future and explore the role that robots might thereby play.

Curator-guided tour ARTIFICIAL TEARS. Singularity & Humanness—A Speculation

with Marlies Wirth

The group exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS cites a speculative, unwritten chapter of human history. 13 artists examine the quality of “humanness” against the background of science fiction and “singularity.”

The group exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS cites a speculative, unwritten chapter of human history. The augmentation or “optimization” of the human organism is completely redefining conventional concepts and lifestyles—from business models to human life cycles, including the concept of dying. The boundary between animate and inanimate substances seems ever more implausible, as in the difference between “real” people and their media incarnations, between “original” objects and dummies. 13 artists examine the quality of “humanness” against the background of science fiction and “singularity.”

Meeting point: MAK Exhibition Hall, ground floor

Overview Tour VIENNA BIENNALE (English)

Artificial Intelligence, automatized working environments, the Internet of Things, “transparent” human beings: this tour provides an overview of the challenges of digitalization.

Artificial Intelligence, automatized working environments, the Internet of Things, unlimited digital communication, “transparent” human beings, new individuality: turbo-digitalization is turning our (working) lives upside-down at break-neck speed. But who will look after the interests of human beings in this digital revolution driven by technological and economic forces? This tour provides an overview of the challenges of digitalization.

Workshop for 8- to 12-year-olds (unaccompanied)
Cost: € 8

Artificial Intelligence—Genuine Emotions. How Robots Shape Our Lives

Today we depend on intelligent devices to get us through our daily lives. We trust our smart assistants to navigate us through strange cities, remind us of appointments, and keep us informed at all times on any given topic.

Closing event of the exhibition Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine in context of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017: Robots. Work. Our Future.

A MAK FUTURE LAB event in cooperation with the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, sponsored by the BMVIT, Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology

Today we depend on intelligent devices to get us through our daily lives. We trust our smart assistants to navigate us through strange cities, remind us of appointments, and keep us informed at all times on any given topic. They measure our pulse-and if necessary even call the emergency services. Anyone who's had to dispense with a smartphone for an entire (work)day knows how dependent we've become on these clever little devices-and how helpless we are when it turns out they are not quite as smart as we thought.

What is the nature of the relationship between human and machine? Can we trust these machines? Will they learn to love us?

Tour

Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine

In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already changed broad areas of our living and working environments. In this tour, we make contact with an increasingly ubiquitous species: the robot.

The intrusion of intelligent, autonomous machines into our everyday lives has long been more than just a utopian fantasy. In part silently and invisibly, robotics has already fundamentally changed broad areas of our living and working environments, whereby the relationship of human beings to this new technology is often ambivalent. In this tour, we make contact with an increasingly ubiquitous species: the robot.
